What To Consider When Purchasing Your Wedding Suit

At S.M Bespoke, we are expecting a huge rush of wedding clients this year, and we thought it might be helpful for anyone thinking about getting a bespoke suit done for their upcoming 2022 wedding to outline some of the main things to consider when purchasing your bespoke wedding garments.

  • The Season

The first thing we recommend considering is the season. Is it a summer wedding where you need to think about heat, breathability and how the suit will work for an outdoors ceremony? Is it a fall wedding where you need to be prepared for different types of weather? Or is it a winter wedding in which case you might want a more formal tuxedo for an indoor evening ceremony?

There are no hard and fast rules here, but with our selection of over 60,000 fabrics, many of them are more suitable for certain times of year than others. Formalwear such as tuxedos and velvets are popular for winter weddings held inside as the fabrics are more delicate but also luxurious and warm. Linens and fresco fabrics are perfect for summer weddings with their lightness, wide span of colors and patterns and their breathability. Flannels and wools are great year around fabrics that will work for most types of weather. To read more about our process and how we guide you through our fabric selection, click here

Another reason to keep the season in mind is that certain colors and patterns work particularly well for certain seasons. Rust, burgundy, rich brown tones work especially well for fall/winter. Beige, light greys and pastels are great choices for spring/summer weddings.

  • Wedding colors

Speaking of colors, the second thing we recommend considering for your bespoke wedding garment is any wedding colors you’d like to incorporate in your garments or outfit. Weddings often have color schemes in the flowers, décor, invitations, or venue that the couple wants to use to create a theme for the event.

If there are specific wedding colors, it’s worth keeping them in mind to avoid clashing with them, or to include them in the bespoke garments. If the flowers have green and jewel tones, an emerald or navy garment could look beautiful and compliment the wedding colors well. If the invitations and décor center on pastels, a light grey or beige might allow the softer colors to pop more.

  • The Wedding Party

Another consideration is the number of people in wedding party and the colors of their outfits. If there are many bridesmaids or groomsmen and you want to make sure that there is a red thread in the outfits of the wedding party, this can be accommodated with bespoke garments. The wedding couple can keep patterns in mind that include the colors of the wedding party’s outfits, or even match the wedding couples’ bespoke garments with accessories of the wedding party.

A popular way of doing this is picking the colors for the wedding party and having some sort of presence of that color in the bespoke garment. That could be lining colors, contrasting thread , patterns the match the wedding party, or pocket squares and/or ties that are coordinated. You can get creative here and coordinate the colors any way you’d like. And, if you are looking for bespoke garments for the entire wedding party, we offer discounts for orders of 5 suits or more at one time. You can read more about this here

  •  Personal Style

The most important thing to keep in mind for your bespoke garment is your personal style. While we always recommended getting inspiration from places like Instagram and Pinterest, keeping a sense of your personal style works best and results the most wearable overall look. We are always more than happy to help you curate your inspiration pictures.

If you like bolder looks and styles, go for something in a vibrant color or maybe an out-of-the-box pattern. Maybe you love dressing up and love a chance to wear a tuxedo or an impressive dinner jacket. Maybe you are more low-key and like an effortless look with simple or plain fabrics that are soft above all else. Remember, at the end of the day, you are the one wearing the suit, hopefully for a very long time. During your design consultation, we always keep the clients’ personal style and needs at the forefront of the design process. • Wearability

That brings us to the final recommendation. The great thing about getting a timeless, bespoke suit made for your wedding is that you will have most of your basic suit needs covered. If you don’t wear suits often for work or social occasions, one or two classic suits are typically more than enough to make sure you have something to wear as a wedding guest, to work events, interviews, or special occasions. Keeping in mind that bespoke garments are made to last a lifetime, making your wedding suit wearable for different events is always a good idea. Choosing neutral colors, with or without some subtle patterns, means that you can wear the individually or together depending on the occasion.
